After a five-month hiatus, Liz Wilcox — the Fresh Princess of Email Marketing — is back and diving into one of her most-requested topics: how to infuse your voice into your email marketing. Inspired by a question from listener Alyssa, a tarot reader and astrologer, Liz breaks down the simple (but not easy) process of developing a recognizable, confident voice in your emails — one that makes readers feel like they know you.
Episode Highlights
- Liz’s reminder that mastering your voice takes a crazy amount of practice — just like getting comfortable on camera or behind a microphone.
- Why you should email at least once a week to build confidence and natural flow.
- The key mindset shift: assume your audience already loves you.
- When you assume readers like you, perfectionism fades, and your real voice shines.
- Liz writes as if she’s talking to her “inbox besties” — people who already know and support her.
- How assumptions shape connection: when you treat subscribers like friends, they start living up to those expectations.
- Injecting personality without oversharing:
- Share authentic details that reflect your interests or quirks (e.g., Liz’s love for NSYNC, Survivor, and bold colors).
- You don’t need to reveal everything — just enough to make your voice distinct.
- Why sharing your vision helps your voice come through naturally: Liz’s vision is simple — “help you make money with email marketing.”
- How to highlight your values (like inclusivity, simplicity, and learning from mistakes) to deepen connection.
- Practical tip: Reply to your readers and write back — it gives you real-world practice using your authentic tone.

What’s up? Liz Wilcox in the house. Hey. Hey, hey. This is episode 164 of the Email Sound Booth podcast. I’m so excited to be back. I know you don’t care, but I have been on hiatus for about four, maybe five months. But I’m back, baby. And as you can hear, you’re hearing my voice, right? So let’s talk about it. Let’s talk about my voice. Let’s talk about your voice. This is how to infuse your voice into your email marketing, into your newsletters, into your sales letters.
Okay? So this question I asked my audience, because that’s something you should do all the time when you’re creating content. Don’t create content you want. Create content they want. Okay, baby. So Alyssa, a tarot reader and astrologer, she’s asking me, Liz, I want to hear about how you infuse. Infuse your voice into your email. It’s like when I read them, I feel like I know you. Oh, my gosh. Thank you, Alyssa. Maybe you already covered this in the podcast. Maybe not. I didn’t. Not really. So, Alyssa and you, who are. Who is listening? It’s actually. I mean, it’s simple, but it’s not easy, right?
So first and foremost, you gotta have a crazy amount of practice, right? The same way that I feel comfortable hitting record on this, I haven’t recorded in four or five months. There is like an Amazon box in the background. I got a box spring in the background if you’re watching on YouTube. And I literally just noticed it. But that’s because I’m so comfortable being on camera. I’m so comfortable hitting that record button because I’ve had crazy amounts of practice. And so when it comes to using your voice, injecting your voice, don’t overthink it. Just start writing the same with video. Just hit record.
If you go back to episode 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, they’re probably going to be a little more awkward than I being right now, right? And I had those much more scripted. So you just need a crazy amount of practice. Email at least once a week. My baby, please, Alyssa, friends. Email at least once a week. Get that crazy amount of practice. I have been writing a weekly newsletter or more for almost 10 years. So, of course Alyssa thinks, you know, when I read it, it feels like I know you, right? Because I’ve had so much practice.
Also, I assume, assume a lot of things about my reader, about my subscriber. I do not assume that I have to win you over. I assume you’re already won over, baby. I’ve got a landing page. We’ve got an episode somewhere about, you know, the things your landing pages need. Definitely go to YouTube, to my channel. You can use the little search bar in my channel and type in landing page. That’ll pop up right up. Or we’ll put it in the show notes. Patricia, are you listening? Put it in the show notes. Somebody email if it’s not in the show notes.
Anyway, I assume you already like me. I assume I can be myself. I assume that I don’t have to put on a mask for you. I assume that you’re basically on the edge of purchasing any and all of my products. Or I assume you are a die hard email marketing membership, you know, lifetime member. You love Liz Wilcox. Liz Wilcox loves you. We’ve already talked in the inbox. Etc. I assume that we already know each other, which makes me, you know, throw perfectionism out the window. If we already know each other and like each other, we don’t have to be perfect, right? We, you know, we can forgive each other, we can be gracious with each other, right?
And so when I’m writing and I make those assumptions of like, you’ve been on my list forever, you’re, you know, you’re one of my peeps, then I can just be myself, right? Just like when I post these on YouTube and, you know, on Apple podcasts, etc, Like, I don’t assume I’m getting any new listeners, but I assume people like Alyssa. I’m thinking of like five or ten people right now that come to all my calls, listen to all my episodes, watch, watch on YouTube because they know I’m trying to get my views up. I just assume that’s you listening, right? And when you assume things like that, you get more comfortable using your voice and side benefit. People just become what you assume, right? They’re living up to your expectations, your assumptions. Love it, love it, love it.
Now for some more practical advice for Alyssa and you. I inject a little bit of personality. Now, this personality is not everything under the sun, right? I’m not sharing all my, you know, dirty secrets with you, okay? This is not postsecret.com okay? But my personality, if you’re watching this right now, oh, my gosh, I just realized I don’t have a headband on, my work uniform is not on, but I am wearing NSync. I’ve got in Sync in the background. Let me move my camera here. You can see my calendar in the background, which has, you know, this is the big Ass calendar by Jesse something or other. I don’t know. We’ll put our affiliate link in the show notes as well. But you. You can see with the calendar in the background. I’m obviously a very organized person. I share that in my emails as well. I share that I love hip hop. I love NSync, fresh prints, you know, I love Survivor. I love color. Right? That’s my personality, right? So you can share your personality without, you know, sharing all these crazy stories, right? So that helps you inject your voice when you inject your personality.
Also, the vision that you have for people. My vision for you is you make money with email marketing. I don’t care about if you’ve got a podcast, if you use social media, whatever. I don’t. Honestly, I don’t care if you write daily emails or once a week. Right? I just care that you are making money with email marketing. Right? And so I share that in my emails. You know, not every email, but it is very obvious to my readers. Now, when you share your vision, you can’t help but share your voice, right? You can’t help but share that vision in a natural way because you’re so passionate about it, right?
And then the last thing, and it’s very much in the same vein, is share some of your values. I believe in inclusivity. I believe in simplicity. I believe in making mistakes. Mistakes, right. Saying and sharing those values. I can’t help but say it in a way that projects my actual voice.
All right, so let’s recap here. Personality, vision, values, put them in there, right? You know, just make assumptions about your reader so you can throw perfectionism out the window. Make an assumption that they already like you. Make the assumption that they want to read every word you say. Make an assumption that, you know, you guys are basically inbox besties, right? Then you can just feel free to use your natural voice. And then last, please do and do a crazy amount of writing. Write every single week. Rewrite your welcome sequence. Every year I do a welcome sequence workshop in January, by the way. Every January it’s coming up. Or you can buy the replay. Anyway, crazy amount of practice. Write, write, write, write. And also a crazy amount of practice is getting replies. Getting replies to emails and writing to those people back will give you lots of practice for, you know, injecting that voice.
All right, this question was for Alyssa, but really it was for you. I hope it was helpful. As always, if you want more email marketing tips, tricks you want to learn and you want to get that practice. You want to know how to inject personality vision values. You want templates that already assume the things I talked about. You can get into email marketing membership. Oh, my gosh, I would love to have you in there. It’s nine bucks a month. It’s a steal of a deal. Link in the show notes, as always. I’m Liz Wilcox. You are amazing, and I’ll see you on the next episode.
