Hey friend! This is the Fresh Pr of Email Marketing speaking and you’re listening to Episode 7 of the Email Sound Booth podcast. Lucky me! Today we’re going over the 5 email marketing tips to make the most out of your small email list. Let’s get it!
#1 don’t segment your list
Look! Chances are if you have a small list, you’re probably new to your industry and business, or you’ve pivoted a lot or been inconsistent, either with contacting your list, or with your messaging. It’s hard to grow your list when you’re constantly changing your mind about what you want to talk about…or if you even want to do email in the first place.
So ignore the advice about segmenting your list. It’s a 2.0 strategy so don’t worry. You’ll get there one day. So minimize your stress darling! Treat your whole list as your whole list so you can maximize the amount of eyeballs on the email content you do send out.
#2 be consistent
My word, if I ain’t said this a million times on this podcast already. You’ve got to be consistent in order for any of this email marketing stuff to work. But you know that already! Honestly, if you never listened to another second of this podcast, if you never joined my Email Marketing Membership, if you just were consistent in emailinig your list…you’d move the needle in your business.
It’s like anything else. You get out what you put in, babe. So pause the podcast right now. Say out loud “I’m going to commit to writing my email newsletter on a consistent basis.” Go on. Pause it. Pause it. I’ll wait.
Okay, fab. Moving on.
#3 master the art of replies
You’ve got a small list, so you’ve got time for replies.
But how the heck do you get replies in the first place. Chances are you’ve probably tried asking questions and no one answers ya back. Which I get is really frustrating.
So here’s a few quick tips: 1- in your welcome sequence, ask a yes or no question (sya whatever here liz)
2- in your newsletters, always ask a yes or no quetsioin. put it at the top. in the middle. at the bottom. switch it up where it is.
3- I’ve got a template for this in my membership, but try a this or that question that has nothing to do with your industry (beach or mountains?)
4- talk about any replies you got in the next email newsletter.
And when you finally do get replies, I want you, when you look at your inbox, not to think about “how can I get to inbox zero.” I want you to think “how can I help each one of these people as best as I can right now?”
Replies matter for your deliverability and they matter for your customer research and engagement. So this is worth your time! Especially since you have a small email list and you don’t have to sweat about getting more than you can handle.
These can often lead to sales conversations and conversions too! Speaking of calls, let’s get to the next tip.
#4 get on calls with the people on your list
It’s like my grandma used to say, if you’re not making sales in your business, you don’t know your customer well enough. Okay, she didn’t say that. She mostly said “where’s my drink?” but you get it.
You’ve got a small list, so I’m gonna assume you haven’t made that many sales and/or you’re new to whatever you’re doing. So use the list to get to know people! JUST TALK TO THEM! Get on a zoom or an ole phone call. Don’t even try to sell anything if that makes you feel stressed. Just talk to them. Sending someting out like “I just want to get to know my people. No sales, let’s just chat.” and then go do just that. Or if you’re getting those replies like we just talked about, that’s another way to invite someone to a chat. Be casual and come ready to serve.
This is going to help you get to know the people on your list, literally, and give you better ideas on how to serve them, aka what content and products to create so they stick around and buy!
#5 shift from “how can i make money from this list” to “how can i serve these people to the max”
This is so important. And I know, you wanna make money from your list. And my vision for you? You make money from your email list!
But in this case, we’ve got to slow down to speed up, okay?
We have to shift our minds from how can i make money from this list.
When we have a small list especially, that can be super anxiety inducing. It can feel like you’re giving you AND your email list an ultimatum. You better move the needle for me or else I’m gonna go back to doing anything and everything else! (Which isn’t good because a few minutes ago we just paused this podcast to commit out loud to commiting, right?)
So take a deep breath. Take comfort in knowing that your email list will make money one day, but only if you can be aware enough to slow down and take your time building something GOOD.
After all, if this stuff was easy and quick, the 1% would be the 99%! Everyone would be doing it and everyone would be financially comfortable etc!
It takes guts and resilience to realize that building a business and an email list that will actually work takes time. And cannot be rushed.
You wouldn’t want to buy a car that you knew was a rush job, right?
Don’t build an email list like that either.
So instead, shifft your mind. Ask yourself “how can I serve these people to the max? What can I create or say or give to them in this email that is going to really really serve them?”
And this isn’t to say give away the world. Most people couldn’t handle the weight of the world if you put it on their shoulders. Serving is knowing what your people want and need and how to give it to them in a way that they can digest it.
So lead from that point of view with your small email list and I think you’ll start to see it grow and convert much faster than anything else you could have tried.
BONUS! Don’t settle for a small email list. Work on visibility strategies and newsletter growth tactics to really get your email marketing game on and poppin’. But that’s an episode for another day. Let’s recap instead.
To maximize the results of your small email list, don’t segment. Be consistent. Commit! I mean it! Master the art of replies and get on calls with those people. Last, shift from how the email list can serve you to how you can serve those on your list.
And as always, come back and share in the reviews of this podcast how this episode helped you today. And if you’re really ready to commit to your small list and growing it but need some help figuring out how to serve them and how to master those replies, I’d love for you to join my $9/month Email Marketing Membership where I give you all the tools and templates to do just that.
Link in the show notes, of course.
Alright, that’s it for today. Maybe later I’ll ocme up with a cool sign off for the show, but until then…happy emailing friend!
