Episode 108: 5 Things Your Landing Page Doesn’t Need

Hey there, savvy marketers and list-building enthusiasts! 🌟 Welcome back to another zippy installment of The Email Sound Booth. In Episode 108, your favorite email aficionado, Liz Wilcox, dives deep into the often-murky waters of landing page design. Spoiler Alert: It’s time to Marie Kondo your landing pages and only keep what truly sparks joy—and results!

Here’s what you can expect in this bite-sized podcast nugget:

  1. Less is More: Forget about novel-length copy. Your landing page should have just enough text to make them say, “Yes, I need this!” Trim it down and keep it snappy.
  2. Bio, Shmio: Unless you casually founded a little startup like Netflix, leave the life story at the door. Your expertise will shine through with the killer content you offer, not the paragraphs about your origins.
  3. Simplicity in Sign-Up: Take it easy on the form fields. Just an email is fine. Names are nice; last names, not necessary. Let’s ditch the friction and get those sign-ups rolling in!
  4. Minimalist Scrolling: If your thumb starts to cramp from all the scrolling, it’s time to chop, chop, chop! Keep that vital info at the top and easy to find.
  5. Font-astic Restraint: Stay cool and collected with 1-2 font styles. Remember, if everything’s bold, then nothing stands out. Highlight like a pro; no need for a font party.

And for all you rock stars ready to revamp that landing page, Liz invites you to join her at List Building Live from March 11th to 13th. It’s like a podcast, but a supercharged conference version. Learn from a diversity of speakers—think of it as the Avengers of email list building!

Be sure to join us and upgrade those landing pages to level awesome. 👏 Check out the show notes for more deets and links to register.

Catch you on the next episode, my fabulous friend! 🚀

P.S. Remember, you’re totally capable of growing your list. Now get out there and show those pixels who’s boss!

What is up? Episode 108 of the email Sound booth. That’s what you’re listening to right now. I feel so freaking lucky. Thank you so much. Now let’s get into it, shall we? Five things your landing page does not need. All right, remember, we are talking all about list building and the elements of list building. Why? Because you can’t grow your audience, you can’t grow your income without growing your email list. Those are just F A X facts. Okay? So, number one, excessive copy. Your landing page is just a simple page.

Hey, do you want this or not?

Right? There are a few exceptions to this rule, and I know everybody wants to think they’re a special snowflake, but chances are you’re probably not. So look at your landing page.

Is there a lot of copy on it? How can you cut your little darlings, my love?

Okay, number two, your landing page does not need your bio. You know, maybe a line or two. If you feel it’s absolutely necessary to know that you are an expert or you’ve developed some sort of method, you know, that might be a thing, but most likely not, right? Like, if I was the founder of Netflix, I might put founder of Netflix. Right? But most of us are not. So it doesn’t. We don’t need our bio. You know, it’s kind of assumed we know what we’re talking about because we have this landing page. Okay?

The next thing you don’t need on your landing page is to collect the last name of your subscriber. Honestly, you don’t even need to collect the name of the subscriber. I prefer it. I think it’s a nice to have. It’s not a need, but it’s a. It’s a very. I would say it’s a very nice to have. But you definitely, definitely don’t need to ask them for their last name. We want to reduce the friction. That’s why I say the name is.

A very nice to have. So that when you go to write emails, you can customize them by saying, you know, hey, Liz, here’s your email of the week, instead of just saying, hey, friend.

Right? But you definitely don’t need that last name again. There are special snowflakes out there and you might be one of them listening, but chances are you can drop that last name. The fourth thing is you don’t really need more than a scroll or a scroll and a half worth of copy and images, Right? We want the landing page to be as short as possible. I guess this goes hand in hand with the Excessive copy thing. But that’s how important it is that I put it twice on this list if you are on your mobile. And again, if you’re watching me on YouTube, you can go to watchliz.com, by the way, for that. If I’m scrolling.

Sorry, like, if I’m scrolling more than this, you know, that’s way too much copy.

You know, I just, I want everything.

All in one and then maybe scroll a little bit more. Right? So again, that goes back to number one, excessive copy.

Wrong.

That does not go on your landing page.

And the last thing your landing page most likely does not need are, you know, crazy amount of fonts and hella headings. Right? We don’t need a lot of headings. You know, if everything’s in bold, nothing’s in bold, Right. If everything’s large text, nothing is large text. What do you really want to stand out? Put that in bold or italicize or make that the heading. Right? Also, you don’t need a crazy amount of fonts you don’t need to use. If you’re. You hired a designer and they gave you three brand fonts, you don’t need to use all three. One is enough. Two is just fine as well. But definitely using three fonts or more is gonna be a big fat no. No. All right, I went through those really quick.

We’re at four minutes. Wow, you are so smart when you listen to the email sound booth because.

You get quick, actionable takeaways for, you know, you know, just at the start of your walk or the start of your dishes.

You could binge episodes all the way back. Anyway, enough about me. Let’s talk about you. If you really need to work on your list building, if you want to know more about how to get eyeballs on that amazing landing page, you’re going to update today, right? Wink, wink. I would love for you to join me at list building live, March 11th through the 13th. I’m so freaking excited about it. We’ve got speakers from all different backgrounds.

I’m talking Internet safety, blogging, canva, personal organization, all sorts of different kinds of industries, talking about how they’ve grown their list in the last six to 12 months. And just like this podcast episode, this is gonna be like a private podcast audio summit. None of the speakers are more than like 10 minute sessions. So you can just like you’re going to do right now, you can binge that and learn how you want to grow your email list, how you want to get more eyeballs on this updated landing page, you’re about to have anyway, that is in the show notes for you list building live March 11th through the 13th. I am Liz Wilcox. As always, you are amazing and totally capable of growing your list. I’ll see you on the next episode, my friend.
